As early as 1940, graduate chapters of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc. had begun to realize the importance of the prestige, good will and cooperation of women who were not eligible to be members of any Greek-letter organization. In 1948 a group of three women organized to assist Zeta Phi Beta Sorority members in whatever capacity they were needed. They chose the Latin name Amicae (Friend) for their auxiliary. The first chartered group was given to Lambda Zeta Chapter of Houston, Texas. The first undergraduate chapter to present an auxiliary was Kappa Alpha of Miners Teachers. The Memphis Amicae was chartered on January 30, 1959
The Zeta Amicae auxilary is composed of women who have not obtained a degree but wish to assist Zeta Phi Beta Sorority members in their activities. These women are from various backgrounds and professions. They volunteer their time, talent, skills, and abilities to serve. Their motto is “To Serve.”
Purpose of the Amicae
• Lend assistance to Zeta Phi Beta Sorority with their activities
• Promote good public relations between Zeta and community women
• To make non-Greek women feel closer to the program of a Greek organization
• To assure more cooperation in community affairs sponsored by Zeta
